Description
Huntsville Madison County 9-1-1 seeks a Radio Technician. Reporting to the Wireless Manager, this entry-level position (with potential to grow) involves day-to-day technical tasks, in coordination with the Wireless Manager, to keep 9-1-1’s radio infrastructure operational, including system monitoring, upkeep, preventive and routine maintenance, repairs, and improvements. The radio technician works closely with external vendors and subcontractors and the local radio shop to ensure the system continues to operate properly in a mission critical environment. hardware and software technical support for all aspects of the radio infrastructure, including user interfaces, towers, buildings, and all related equipment and antennas. This is a front-line position for providing excellent customer service to members of the general public and other agency employees.
As the Radio Technician, you'll earn a starting hourly rate of $20-$24 (based on experience) with exceptional benefits, including fully paid medical insurance coverage and participation in the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension program. Annual cost-of-living increases and milestone-based raises are also included.
Responsibilities
The number one priority for this position is a passion for Radio. Most experience can be obtained through training as long as the employee has a sincere radio interest and a basic understanding of electronics and radio. Amateur radio license is strongly desired; IT experience is preferred but not required.
Qualifications
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting; however, duties will require significant mobility and physical requirements, particularly when visiting outdoor radio towers and other related facilities. Emotional stress levels may frequently be high. Duties may include occasional exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme heat and/or cold, humidity, rain, all-terrain mobility, etc. in cases where outside work is required.
Work Schedule
As the Radio Technician, you'll typically work 40 hours, 5 days a week, which may include weekends, with office hours to be set by the Wireless Manager. You may be required to come in during off duty hours to handle emergencies, including during periods of inclement weather. Regular on-call status is required for this position. On-call duties may be rotated among multiple personnel. While in on-call status, employee may be required to access systems remotely or report on site to handle emergencies at any time 24/7, regardless of weather conditions.

Responsibilities
- Provides the day-to-day technical skills to ensure the radio infrastructure is operating properly in both the present and the future
- Works with vendors, subcontractors, and team members to coordinate their activities
- Assists the Wireless Manager in preparing system performance and usage reports; assisting users with training operations of applicable systems
- Assists Wireless Manager in supporting decisions impacting the operation of the regional radio system and government entities, including capital projects; conducts research and recommends new communication technologies
- Supports the planning of future electronics communication systems needs
- Provides day-to-day support in the maintenance and operations of the radio infrastructure
- Participates in/on a variety of meetings, committees, user groups, and/or other related groups in order to receive and/or convey information
- Assists other HMC 9-1-1 technical personnel in maintenance and operations of the Center’s networks, including IT equipment, software, and systems
- Performs other job-related duties as directed

Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school preferred; alternatively, equivalent military or vocational school training, or two years of progressively responsible related technical experience desired
- FCC General Radio Operators License, APCO public safety radio certification, ETA or equivalent certification, or ability to attain the above within one year of employment
- Basic understanding of electronic communications theory; state of the art communication systems, including voice and data; radio frequency theory; ability to troubleshoot
- Ability to apply mathematical operations to perform technical analysis
- Strong judgment, decision-making abilities, and interpersonal skills are essential
- Proficiency in computer software
- Excellent communication skills
- Effective time management skills are required.
- Interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc.; ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed, and consider larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns
- Must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License, or equivalent
